The details

The cage is the point. A bare filament bulb is beautiful and unusable, because the filament itself is far brighter than anything around it. Wire mesh cuts the glare without hiding the bulb, so you still see the shape of the filament through it. It runs on batteries rather than mains, which is the only reason a lamp like this can sit somewhere with no socket.
