The details

The corners are radiused rather than square, which is a manufacturing decision that turns into a practical one — nothing collects in a rounded corner and a cloth reaches all of it. The lip is low, high enough to stop a cup sliding off and low enough that you can slide a plate on rather than lifting it over.
