The details
Paper is the oldest answer to the problem every lamp has, which is that a bulb is too bright to look at. Instead of hiding the source behind a shade, the whole surface glows at a fraction of the brightness, so there is no hotspot anywhere on it and nothing to squint past. The ribbing is structural rather than decorative: it is what holds a paper shell in shape without a frame inside it.
Styling it
Low down rather than at eye level. On the floor beside a chair, or on the bottom shelf, where it reads as a pool of light instead of a lamp. The round one suits a corner, the long one suits a narrow gap.
