The details

The hexagons are cut all the way through, which is what makes it work — a solid board would hold the heat against the table, and a gap is a better insulator than any thickness of wood. Hexagons rather than round holes because they tile without leaving weak spans between them, so the trivet stays rigid despite being mostly air.

Styling it

It reads as a piece of geometry when nothing is on it, which is the test a trivet usually fails. Leave it out on the counter.
