The details

Acacia is dense and figured, which is why it is used for boards that get left out — the grain is the decoration. Cut from solid stock rather than glued strips, so the figure is continuous across the face. Oiled, not lacquered: it can be cut on, and the marks weather in rather than showing as scratches.
