The details

Rattan is wound in a spiral from the centre out and bound at the rim, which is what stops the weave opening up under weight. The thickness is the insulation — there is no pad or backing, just enough air trapped in the weave to keep heat off the table. Being hand-wound, no two spiral the same number of turns.

Styling it

They work as trivets and they work as coasters for a large glass, but the honest reason to own them is the texture: woven rattan is the one warm surface in a kitchen full of hard ones.
