The details
The ridge is not decoration — it is the stick rest, and putting it inside the dish rather than on a separate stand means all the ash falls where it can be tipped out. The glaze pools deeper in the valleys of the ridge and thins over the peaks, so the profile shows up as a change in colour as well as in shape.
Styling it
It works with the ridge lit sideways. Near a lamp rather than under one, so the profile casts.
