Materials & finish
Cast resin. Cast resin takes a consistent matte finish; very small surface marks from the mould seam are normal and usually invisible at arm's length.

The details
The loop creates a hole, and the hole is what makes it work: you see the wall through the object, which stops it from reading as a solid lump. It also means it changes considerably as you move past it, which is more than most decorative objects manage.
