The details

The animal is the handle, not an ornament stuck on top, so the lid is lifted by the thing itself and the gilding is where your fingers go. Ribbing on the body is turned into the mould and stops just below the rim, which is what makes the smooth lid sit as a separate element rather than continuing the form.
