Powder-coated metal. The plating is applied over a formed body; the finish is uniform but very thin, so treat it as a surface rather than solid metal.

The details
A bookend should hold a row up without announcing itself. Thin sheet steel is the right answer: the vertical face sits behind the last book and the horizontal foot goes under it, so what you see from the front is books and nothing else. Felt or a soft pad underneath protects the shelf.
Styling it
Anywhere a row does not reach the end of the shelf. In pairs, obviously. If the shelf is glass, add a felt pad — thin steel edges can scratch.
