The details
Felt is pressed rather than woven, so it has no weave to fray and can be cut to size with no hem at all — that raw edge is why the mat reads as one clean rectangle instead of a bordered mouse pad. It is also quiet: a felt surface deadens the noise of a keyboard and a set-down mug in a way a hard desk does not.
Styling it
