Powder-coated metal. The plating is applied over a formed body; the finish is uniform but very thin, so treat it as a surface rather than solid metal.

The details
Ordinary bookends hold books up and then get out of the way. These make the row look deliberate: the two figures lean inward as if the books were the thing holding them, which turns a shelf of paperbacks into an arrangement. Weighted enough for a real row.
Styling it
At either end of a short shelf so the figures face each other. Warm brass wants warm surroundings — oak, cream, unpainted wood rather than white gloss.
