The details

The gold is fired on rather than printed, which is why the edge where it meets the black is crisp and slightly raised — a printed line on ceramic blurs under glaze. Cork on the base does two jobs: it stops the ceramic scratching a table, and it stops the coaster lifting with the glass, which is the usual annoyance with a smooth-bottomed one.
