The details
The proportions are the design. Japanese trays run shallower and thinner-walled than European ones, which makes them look lighter on a surface and stack more neatly. There is no decoration because the grain is meant to be the only thing you notice.
Styling it
Tea, a single bowl, or a small group of objects on a low table. It suits restrained arrangements — three items at most. Dry cloth only.
