The details
Backflow cones have a hollow channel through the middle. The smoke they make is cooler and denser than the surrounding air, so it sinks through that channel and falls down the burner rather than rising. It only works with backflow cones — ordinary incense cones will not do it — and it needs a still room.
Styling it
Away from open windows, doors and fans; any moving air destroys the fall. A shelf at chest height shows it best. Wipe the channel clear of ash between uses or the flow stalls.
